Hygienist Services at Oldmachar Dental Care
It is important to remember that, if we are to have healthy teeth, we also need healthy gums.
Regular appointments with your hygienist will prevent a build-up of plaque, which encourages bacteria growth and can lead to bad breath, inflamed gums, tooth decay and in severe cases, tooth loss. It will also allow us to closely monitor any gum issues if present, and prevent any early signs of gum disease becoming more severe.
What will happen during my hygienist appointment?
Plaque Prevention Mini
The plaque prevention mini is a 30 minute hygienist appointment, and is a crucial element of your good oral health routine. Plaque prevention is recommended as a preventative measure to maintain a healthy oral environment, and support any restorative treatment.
Your dentist/hygienist will:
- Carry out a thorough scaling of your teeth to remove any plaque or tartar build-up in those areas brushing cannot reach e.g. beneath the gum
- Perform a clean and polish to remove any superficial stains on your teeth
- Monitor any signs of gum problems such as inflammation or receding gums
- Offer tailored advice on how to maintain good dental health and demonstrate techniques you can use at home, including recommending the best tools for your needs
Plaque Prevention Extended
This appointment takes 45 minutes, and is recommended when more extensive plaque removal is required and/or if there are more surface stains on the teeth. In addition to the treatment above, your dentist/hygienist will use specialist Air-flow® technology to remove stubborn plaque and stains.
What is Air-Flow®?
Air-flow® uses an air-powder mixture and water to deliver a pain free cleaning treatment. It projects a jet of compressed air, water and fine powder particles onto the surface of the tooth to polish the surface and remove debris. It quickly and effectively removes plaque, soft debris and surface stains to reveal a brighter smile. The stain removal result uncovers the natural whiteness of your teeth, and gives a brighter, healthier smile.
In addition to creating a healthy oral environment and naturally brighter teeth, the Air-Flow® can be used to support further treatment. It can thoroughly clean and open fissures for sealing, cleans and prepares the surface of the tooth for bonding orthodontic brackets, and removes any bacteria encouraging plaque to promote better healing after treatment.
The Air-Flow® technology is gentle on your teeth, and makes no noise, creating a comfortable patient experience with instant results.
How often should I attend hygienist appointments?
It is good practice to see your hygienist every six months for a scale and polish to maintain good oral health. You may be advised to visit more often or be recommended more specialist treatment if you have signs or symptoms of gum disease, or have dental restorations in your mouth.
